Restoring Elderpride The Dorotha C. White Foundation is dedicated to ending wasted lives in nursing homes. We institutionalize 1.3 million aging Americans annually in our 17,000 nursing homes, and 550,000 of them die each year. How many die prematurely is an educated guess. If it is only 10%, that is 55,000 lives being lost and wasted because of abuse, neglect, inadequate staffing, resource shortages, profit motives over care of the elderly, regulatory agency obstacles, and systemic infrastructure and organizational problems. By offering hope of productive lives in nursing homes, we can improve patients' quality of life by restoring their functioning to the highest level, either by discharges back into the community, assisted living, independent living, or improvements in the functionality of patients who need to reside in nursing homes. We can convert warehouses into care houses by pursuing health preservation and wellness, instead of profit and money, through deductive models of care to restore rather than warehouse the elderly. By bringing a message of hope and empowerment to patients, families, government, nursing home owners and providers, we can solve this escalating crisis and ensure a positive future for our elderly loved ones.
